Whole Body Cryotherapy(WBC)

More and more people are using WBC to expedite their recovery, manage fatigue, muscle soreness and inflammation. I have used it with a variety of patients, and I have seen it benefit both folks with chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis and degenerative joint pain, as well as folks looking to bounce back after a tough week of workouts. It can be an effective alternative, or in many cases, complimentary to more traditional modalities of pain management!
WBC treatments are administered individually via a CryoSauna. Each individual starts with a two minute session. In subsequent sessions, the time is extended with the maximum treatment time being three minutes. The cryosauna uses gasiform nitrogen to rapidly lower the skin’s top layer to 32°F while cabin temperature drops to a range of (minus) -220°F to -274°F. During the two to three minutes of extreme cold, the brain stimulates the body’s organ regulatory functions resulting in energy increase, cell rejuvenation, immune system boost, and overall system self-healing.
The most elementary way of explaining this is that your brain thinks you are going into hyperthermia; it pulls the blood from your extremities and shunts it to your core to protect the vital organs. During that time, the blood is circulating through your heart at an accelerated pace, picking up nourishment and being re-oxygenated. When the session is over your brain realizes that you are going to be ok, pulls out of survival mode and pushes the healthy, enriched blood to the rest of the body. This is where the healing begins!

There are only a few conditions that prevent patients from doing whole body cryotherapy: Pregnancy, Raynaud’s syndrome, severe hypertension (BP > 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction (heart attack: need to be cleared for exercise), arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, uncontrolled seizures, and age less than 18 years (parental consent required).
Whole Body Cryotherapy is just one of many tools we use at Athlos to manage the recovery process, but it is one that has tremendous benefit when you are trying to ensure that your body operates efficiently. I am a tremendous advocate but also a cautious consumer… I needed to feel it and research it to ensure I felt like it was a good addition to my practice. How much does it cost?
For anyone interested in trying it, the initial session at Athlos is $25.00. For FitFarm members, all follow up sessions are $30.00 – significantly less than the average cryo session in Omaha!
